Morse Project
MORSE (Modeling and Observation of River-Sea Exchanges) is a collaborative project between the l’Università Politecnica delle Marche and the l’US Naval Research Laboratory.
The primary objective of the MORSE Project is that of performing long-term observations and intensive mathematical/numerical modeling to develop a data assimilation/morphological forecasting system.
The MORSE project wants to investigate the short- to long-term dynamics of a small-scale engineered river mouth environment and study the exchanges of river-sea water and sediments, as well as the complex morphodynamics characterizing these kinds of environments.
The study area is the mouth of the Misa River (Senigallia, Italy) that can be considered representative of small-scale, microtidal river mouths, characterized by mixed sediments (from sands to cohesive silts and clays).
To accomplish the above goals, different instruments have been installed within the area of Senigallia, with the aim to investigate the river discharge (USGS-style gauge station), the wave climate (offshore ADCP) and the tidal forcing (tide gauge). Moreover, a new X-band radar has been installed for the nearshore sea-wave monitoring. The project also uses existing instrumentation, like the Sena Gallica Speculator (SGS) video-monitoring system.
